If Vriska wasn’t just able to control people, but also on a minor note feel their emotions, then that explains why she acts so needy and possissive at times. If she felt everyone’s negative thoughts on her, even from her best friend, then she would go insane trying to get forgiveness (like with the “prank” of blowing up her arm”) 

So Vriska had to kill trolls to feed her caretaker spider so she won’t be eated, can manipulate trolls, feel their emotions on how people don’t really like her (either when dying or just in general), which fueled her to double down and just embrace the chaos of being viewed as a “bad guy” only for her to go nuts on trying to make up with her friends because she can sense their emotions but just doesn’t understand Why.
