But he is right. A ghost would be like a personification of someone’s soul, something that was already living and wished to retain their life so they take their living form.
A spirit is something that wasn’t alive, but gained sentience and power from the life around it. If you say something like a Tree-Spirit, those would be a Tree that has aged for so long that it became conscious and gained power. Some spirits have specific conditions. There is a wheel demon that happens when an old wagon wheel starts rolling down the mountain, becomes sentient and able to move around on its own.
Other spirits that can would count are animal spirits, which take animal forms and have magical powers.
